Why We Print on Paper First

A short defense of analog proofs in a digital-first practice.

Every edition we release passes through paper before it passes through anything else. There are reasons for this that are practical and reasons that are not. Both kinds of reasons are real, and both kinds of reasons matter.

The practical reasons: a paper proof tells you whether the work survives the trip from screen to surface. It tells you whether the blacks hold, whether the whites breathe, whether the registration sits where you thought it would.

The other reasons: paper makes us slow down. It costs something. It commits us. It refuses, gently, to be undone.
