Some time ago, we sat down and wrote six rules. They were not for anyone else. They were for us — the studio, the editorial desk, the small group of people who decide when an edition is ready and when it is not. We have broken all six of them at least once. We still believe in all six of them.
1. The work decides the calendar
Not the market. Not the season. Not the pressure to ship. If the work is not ready, the calendar moves. The calendar always moves.
2. Scarcity is honesty, not strategy
An edition's size should reflect how many copies the work can stand. If the work can stand fifty, mint fifty. If it can only stand twelve, mint twelve. Never round up to feel productive.
3. Every drop comes with a closed door
Once an edition is sold, it is closed. We do not reopen it, expand it, or quietly mint a few extras for the team. The number on the back is the number on the back.
The other three rules are private — for now. They are the ones we are still learning to keep.
