Etienne Mbeki keeps a small mirror on his press. He does not look at his face in it. He looks at the back of his prints, held up to the light, the mirror catching whatever the paper has not yet decided to keep.
"Every print is two prints," he says. "The one you can see, and the one the paper is still becoming."
